The conquest.
In 238 B.C. the Punic troops stationed in Sardinia rebelled against Carthage, asking Rome for help. The Romans took this advantage to seize their power in the island, so well strategically positioned and plenty of natural resources. The consul T. Sempronio Gracco took over the main towns along the coasts and in the 227 B.C Sardinia became Roman province with Corsica.
Sardinia went through a deep 途omanization� process, but the inlands remained hostile to the new dominators, as in the past against the Punics. The Latin sources hands down numerous campaigns against the rebel population, sometimes culminating with cruel battles.
Few considerations about the 殿ntagonistic� nature of the Sardinians.
The Sardinians� resistance against the Romans has been very obstinate, strongly refusing to submit to the radical transformation of habits and values wanted by the Roman domination. The Carthaginians instead, maybe confident about their strategic and economic strength, didn稚 impose any ethic transformation and for that reason the cohabitation has been easier.


Sardinia and the civil war.
Sardinia enjoys a central position in the Mediterranean and then represented a strategic point for trades and other economic interests. Sardinia has been also involved in the civil war between Mario and Silla and Cesar and Pompeo during the I century B.C.

Sardinia: a land of exile.
The Romans considered Sardinia as a land where send and segregate non-aligned people. And this consideration further contributed to the 途omanization� process of the island.
