Introduction.
During the Byzantine domination (534 B.C – 880 A.C.) Sardinia started to enjoy for the first time a sort of autonomous government . in the same period, around the 698 A.C., the Arabians conquered Carthage.
Organization.
Justinian, the Eastern Emperor, after the Vandals’ defeat, divided the island in “districts” managed by a “Judex” with his residence in Cagliari. The military power was given to a “Dux”, living in Forum Traini (today Fordongianus). The indomitable Barbagia remained almost independent, as it happened in the past with the previous dominations from the Phoenicians to the Punics and the Romans. Barbagia also created an independent kingdom characterised by laic and pagan connotations, but it had a short life.
The Byzantine increased the fiscal pressure. During the Byzantine domination the Sardinian population have been left to their own devices, mostly during the Arabic raids. Therefore their independence and autonomy became stronger and stronger.
