The culture of San Michele from Ozieri.
Dating.
During the recent Neolithic (around 3200 B.C.) a variety of new cultural values spread out all around the Sardinia island. People changed habits and customs and this fact is translated in new and original shapes. The long “journey” of the culture from Ozieri, considered the first Sardinian culture, starts from now and here. It’s also considered the most significant culture of the pre-nuraghic period.
Features.
The archaeological excavations have given back artefacts never seen before in Sardinia: pyxes and tripods finely decorated with engravings and often coloured with red ochre and white paste. These artefacts are quite exotic for Sardinia, reminding the typical shape from the eastern Mediterranean and the Greek islands.
For the first time in this period the tripod is used for the food preparation and it’s often decorated. The tripod shape was in fact unknown to the Italian prehistoric cultures but quite common in Sardinia up to the nuraghic civilization.
Quite well documented is also the flint’s and obsidian’s manufacturing, with an important production of guns and tools, in particular arrows’ barbs and blades used as knives.
The origin of the culture from Ozieri is supposed to come from the East, given all the similar cultural signs of both the civilizations. Such similarities seem to testify the frequent relationships among all the Mediterranean populations during the Neolithic period.
Where they lived.
People of the culture from Ozieri lived mainly in villages. They used to build the houses in a stone base where a wooden and leafy structure was placed over. The remains of these villages and the huts’ traces are today visible in San Gemiliano in Sestu, near Cagliari, and in Cuccuru is Arrius, near Cabras.
