Senorbì is approximately 40 km. from Cagliari.
It's the chief town of the Trexenta region and is situated in the central-southern part of the island. Its population of almost 5000 includes the two hamlets of Arixi and Sisini.
Situated in a historically rich area, so much so as to be called "the Roman granary" due to its significant wheat production, over time Senorbì has consolidated its importance in the area.
Senorbì has always been careful to enhance its traditions and is an example of how simple, country-life can be combined with its inhabitants' hospitality, culture, traditions and handcraftsmanship. Spending your vacation in this town means enjoying charming country-life, going for walks along via Carlo Sanna, feeling happy on a bike-ride throughout the country-side, taking part in its culture by visiting the municipal museum, buying a souvenir in the town's quaint little shops or having a drink in one of its many cafés.
An important aspect of senorbiese culture lies in its antique traditions.
What would Senorbì's carnival be without its delicious boiled broad beans offered by the organising committee, or the horse-racing associations' Epiphany celebration "Is Tres Reis" that, at sunset, brings out gifts for the town's children. To the visitor, this tradition is both fascinating and marvellous.
Tourists are most surprised when, at dusk, they encounter three horsemen pulling a cart filled with gifts. Many senorbiesi couldn't imagine neither the religious celebration of Sant'Antioco (Aug. 1st-5th) without its rich, six day calendar of events that attracts hundreds of people from the surrounding areas, nor the St. Lucy celebration (Dec. 13th) without its market booths and the pilgrims that crowd the rural streets and the little church.
Amongst its historical attractions, the Necropolis and the Punic Acropolis are noteworthy. Approximately 2 km. from the actual town of Senorbì, on a modest high ground in Santu Teru, are the remains of a large Punic settlement superimposed on a pre-existing settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. This settlement, whose name is not known, reached an advanced level of development in addition to being a flourishing agricultural centre due to the presence of waterways and fertile grounds. It held an important strategic position with regards to the commercial traffic that went from Cagliari's Campidano up the island towards the eastern and western coasts.
Separated by a small valley, the monumental Necropolis of Mount Luna is only a few meters away from the Santu Teru Acropolis. This is not the only burial area used by the inhabitants of this Punic settlement, as others have been found not very far away. The various excavations from 1977 up until today have uncovered over 120 tombs and a vast series of data and findings.
The historic and cultural importance of the Municipal Museum of Domu Nosta is also noteworthy. Conserved inside an old manor house, for the most part, are archaeological findings uncovered during the excavation of the Punic Necropolis Mount Luna. Trexenta and Senorbì in particular, were an obligatory meeting point between northern and southern Sardinia for those intending to head in the direction of Tharros on the west coast or in the direction of Sarcapos on the east coast.
Guests can't leave the town without having visited the small, old, rural church of St. Mariedda dating back to the XIV Century, and the parish erected, with the help of the parishioners offerings', in honour of St. Barbara. Work began in 1640 and continued throughout the first half of the 1800's. It is constructed with a series of wide-open arches placed on quadrangular columns. These arches and the walls are decorated with dentil. The different light effects that originate in the dome give them a "moving" appearance. Its façade is in late baroque style and has 4 fluted columns topped with capitals that frame the portal over which there is a marble statue of St. Barbara.
For those who wish to prolong their stay in our town, it offers many, high quality tourist facilities.
