The IslandPlaces to seeThe Molentargius PoolCagliari
The south-eastern region of Sardinia is the ideal habitat for pink flamingos.  In particular, they love the Molentargius pool, a large natural salt-pond protected by the Ramsar International Convention.  Numerous rare birds densely populate the area, composed by two basins with different level of saltiness.  This allows the preservation of ecological niches.
Surrounding the pool, spectacular for its beauty and vastness, activities such as hunting and fishing are forbidden in order to protect this natural environment.

The same is valid for the big Santa Gilla marsh.  With its bountiful fish,
it was an endless reservoir for Cagliari's population, once called Karalis.  Unfortunately today, pollution is transforming the area.  Nevertheless, the flamingos still live there as if the marsh were their most preferred home.
