The old Duke of Asinara Palace has today become the new Town Hall.
It was constructed (upon request by the Duke) from a project by Piedmontese engineer Carlo Valino, who made use of collaboration by Lombard master masons. It was constructed between 1775 and 1806 in the area already occupied by five of the same Duke's houses.
However, he died before seeing the palace terminated and the first to dwell in it was his nephew Don Vincenzo Manca.
Subsequently the palace was occupied by various individuals, the prefecture and the Provincial Administration and in 1878 by the Municipality of Sassari, which transferred its offices there.
The ducal palace is on three floors. Its style is from the eighteenth century. The building has vast rooms on the second and third floors destined to the Mayor, the town council and all municipal offices.
Noteworthy is the dance hall and the Duke's reception hall, today room to council meetings.
Inside the palace, there is a garden with many orange and lemon trees; in the middle there was a circular-shaped well decorated with a small statue of Bacco and four marble busts representing the sun, moon, a star and a comet. Unfortunately, the municipality decided to demolish the well and reduced the garden to a courtyard. The busts were placed in the vestibule.
A series of pictures exhibited in the palace constitute the body of the municipal collection and can be chronologically situated between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Externally is the bodywork, characterized by a lovely wooden portal on which the noble family's coat of arms stands out. Recent archaeological research has highlighted traces of dwellings and cellars equipped with reservoirs from the pre-existing neighbourhood that presumably date back to the sixteenth century.
If compared with the remaining civil constructions that can be seen in the city, the palace and its noteworthy massive structure (free on four sides)  in those years represented one of the greatest examples of architecture in this field on the island, thus becoming a model to refer to for further construction.
