The Santa Maria Cathedral was built in 1288 during the rule of Mariano II. Not much of the original structure remains: some parts of the apse, the base of the bell tower and the Gothic chapel of the Rimedio (Our Lady of Good Remedy) with a high cross-shaped vault and groins.
In the Rimedio Chapel there are still many sculptures that date back to the Judicial period like the marble screens with Gothic relief, which were probably carried out by a Catalan artist upon the wish of Eleonora D'Arborea. Part of these sculptures was also a retablo, on which the statue of the Madonna del Rimedio (Our Lady of Good Remedy) once laid but now rests on the altar.
During the eighteenth century, the cathedral underwent a complete restoration, to which it owes its current baroque shapes.
This work constituted the most important monument from the Judicial culture. In fact, many sovereigns from the Giudicato of Arborea were buried inside of it. Unfortunately, its reconstruction in 1729 conserved very few of these extraordinary vestiges.
