The Cathedral of Cagliari dedicated to St. Mary is situated in Piazza Palazzo in the historical quarter of Castello.  The building was constructed by the Pisans in the XIII Century in the place where the church of St. Cecily once existed.  Over the centuries, the church has suffered a lot of transformations that are especially visible on its fa軋de, originally constructed in Roman-Pisan style and modified in 1702 when baroque elements were added.  Later, in 1933, while looking for the original medieval fa軋de, the baroque decorations were substituted by neo-Roman ones that are still present today.
There are still a few elements of the first, original construction like the bell-tower, transept doors, central doors' architrave and some sculpture fragments.  Most of the ornaments and the internal decorations represents the baroque style.
The church was constructed on a cross plan with three naves traversed by a transversal one (transept); the internal area of an altar (presbytery) is raised and closed in by a marble balustrade.  The Triptych of Clemente VII (Trittico di Clemente VII) that represents the Flamingo's school is also placed there.
