In the heart of the old neighbourhood of Stampace (see also la Villa di Tigellio and Chiesa di S. Pietro), in the narrow Via Ospedale, you'll find the beautiful San Michele Church, one of the most interesting examples of Baroque art in Sardinia.
The building is situated in front of the Jesuit Fathers' House of the Noviciate (Casa del Noviziato dei Padri Gesuiti) that now is the Army Hospital.
Begun in the second half of the XVII Century by the Jesuits and presumably completed in the following century, the church was consecrated in 1738 as indicated by an inscription situated near the portal.  The faзade, recently brought back to its original brightness, is decorated with Spanish Baroque elements and is placed perpendicularly to the church's entrance.  At the entrance, there is also a pulpit that dates back to the XVI Century, known as "Carlo V's Pulpit".  The main body of the building has an octagonal plan, with a big dome and beautifully painted, lateral chapels.  The interior of the Church conserves precious polychrome marbles, gold, wooden incisions and stucco works and dates back to the XVIII Century.  The marble high altar is particularly rich and has a statue of St. Michael.
Lastly, the sacristy, finely decorated with stucco works, frescoes and enriched with inlayed cabinets, conserves some oil paintings.  The "Slaughter of Innocents" (La strage degli innocenti) stands out among them.  This quite large painting was restored in the last century, as desired by a Jesuit; portions of the women's nudity were covered.
