Characteristics
Within the context of the Abealzu and Filigosa cultures, archaeologists include an important monument to megalithic architecture, unique to the western world; the terraced temple of Mount d’Accoddi near Sassari. It’s an artificial quadrangular hill about 10m high similar to the Mesopotamian ziqqurath. It’s most likely a temple dedicated to a celestial divinity, perhaps the sun or the mother goddess. The sacred rituals took place at the summit of the construction, access was gained by a ramp. Alongside the ramp and still very visible today, stood a large sacrificial, limestone altar.
