Campidano, Marmilla, Parteolla and Trexenta
|
The province's capital city is surrounded by a vast, flat, agricultural area. The orchards in S. Sperate, the soft rolling hills in the Marmilla (its name comes from “mammella" or mamma due to the area's great fertility) and the wine and oil productions of the Trexenta and Parteolla together, all depict a fine example of traditional, regional farm life as it used to be.
Many nuraghic sites and examples of typical Roman architecture can be found here; a visit to theses places along with its gentle landscape makes for an enjoyable and relaxing stop.
Dolianova-Serdiana, Senorbì, Barumini, Las Plassas, Gesturi-Tuili, Serri, Villanovaforru, Villamar, S. Sperate. Duration: 3-4 days
Dolianova-Serdiana
Let's begin our journey in Dolianova-Serdiana, a must for those who wish to taste excellent olives and olive oil, cheeses and good wines in addition to visiting the churches of S. Pantaleo and S. Maria di Sibiola; all good reasons to stop here.
Senorbì
In Senorbì, taste the “suppa de gintilla a sa sarda" (Sardinian-style lentil soup) with bacon, seasoned fregola (tiny bran flour balls) or “gureu aresti cun ous e limoni" (boiled wild and seasoned cardoons) all accompanied by prestigious local wines.
Barumini, Las Plassas
Let's travel towards Barumini. After a visit downtown and at the nuraghic site Su Nuraxi, just out of town you can taste the “fregula incasada a sa marmiddesa" (cooked fregola smothered in sheep cheese and tomato sauce), wild boar sausage and matured creme of sheep cheese, reserved for those who enjoy rich, flavourful food. A short stop at the Las Plassas castle completes our visit.
Gesturi-Tuili, Serri, Villanovaforru
Stops at Giara di Gesturi-Tuili (volcanic plateau populated by wild ponies), the nuraghic well of S. Vittoria di Serri, the nuraghic village of Genna Maria near Villanovaforru are also all a must.
Villamar, San Sperate
Heading back towards Villamar and its quaint city centre, you arrive at S. Sperate renowned for its peach cultivation and relative peach fest in July. S. Sperate's mural-covered downtown area is quite well-known; these murals have been restored following an antique, ecological Mediterranean tradition compatible with original, crude bricks.
