This area's name comes from the city of Iglesias; prevalently mountainous and abounding with mineral deposits, it has always had a tight link with the mining industry, in operation until the end of the Second World War, after a century of intense activity.
Today the Iglesiente is interesting and fascinating from the tourist's point of view; its ruins and abandoned mining plants can often be found in charming locations surrounded by uncontaminated scenery. Its archaeology, natural beauties and delicious cuisine all invite you to discover this new, unexplored corner of Sardinia.

Siliqua
Your first stop on this journey is in the small town of Siliqua situated in the valley of the Cixerri river, dominated by the site on which the Castle of Acquafredda (originally constructed in approximately the year 1000 and often remodelled thereafter) is situated.
Iglesias
Continuing in the direction of Iglesias, you'll find the well preserved examples of the Roman-Pisan styled churches of S. Chiara and S. Francesco. In this small mining town, be sure to taste the flavourful local bread and “su mustazzeddu" (flat bread filled with fresh tomatoes, garlic and basil) still sold downtown in some of the small bakeries. The mineral sites of Monteponi, S. Giovanni and Campo Pisano are not far from this centre.
Fluminimaggiore
Fluminimaggiore offers you to a visit of the Sardinian-Punic temple of Antas situated in the homonymous valley. Here you can try wild game-based dishes such as sirboni cun oppineddu e mendula (wild boar with pine nuts and almonds) or “cardulinu arrustu" (roasted mushrooms).
Arbus, Guspini, Villacidro
In Arbus and towards Guspini, visit the original mining complex in Ingurtosu and Montevecchio respectively. Typical local gastronomic products, in addition to the well-known cheeses and sausages from the lush, green mountain town of Villacidro, the prestigious oil produced in the entire area, also include honey, a product both mining centres are proud of.
Buggerru, Nebida and Masua
Taking the panoramic road back, you will pass through Buggeru's mines that descend towards the sea and the mining towns of Nebida and Masua, where original mining facilities from the early 1900's can still be found. Stop and taste the “craba a cappottu" (stewed goat meat) along with local vegetables.
