Sassari and Logudoro-Meilogu
|
This itinerary proposes a visit to Sassari, a modern looking city with a pretty downtown area, and the region south of Sassari known as the Logudoro-Meilogu. It's one of the most prosperous areas in Sardinia, composed of flatlands for the most part, where grains and vegetables are grown. Plentiful cheese production is a natural consequence of this flourishing shepherding country. The numerous springs and water-ways also favour this prosperity.
The Logudoro region reached its splendour during the Judicial Period, when the Judge of Torres called the Benedict, Camaldolensian and Cistercian monks in from the peninsula. The later introduced agricultural technology and also constructed magnificent churches that rise from the Logudoresi hills. There are just a few of the many reasons for a visit; Logudoro awaits you.

Bonorva, Semestene
If you happen to stop in Bonorva, make sure to try 都u zichi", traditional bread made from durum grain and for which there is a summer festival, or le pabassinas, a raisin-based desert. Bonorva has many interesting sites to visit, especially for archaeology lovers like the Neolithic necropolis of S. Andrea Priu. Not far from Bonorva and beyond the town centre of Semestene, you will find the archaic Roman church of S. Nicol di Trullas.
Torralba
Continuing along, you arrive in Torralba, quaint town where you can visit the 溺useo della Valle dei Nuraghi del Logudoro-Meilogu" (museum of the Valleys of the Nuraghe of the Logudoro-Meilogu). Not far from Torralba, you will find the magnificent nuraghic Santu Antine palace and the Roman, white-calcareous church of Nostra Signora di Cabu Abbas.
Thiesi, Borutta
Near Thiesi, production hub of cheeses and cheese derivatives, you will find Borutta, a small town well-known for its beautiful Roman basilica S. Pietro di Sorres, one of the most important examples of Roman art in all of Sardinia. Halfway through your journey, you can stop and taste the gastronomic specialities of the Logudoro region such as 杜ustela de porcu" (pork loin), 都u succu istuvadu de Logudoro", stewed soup with fregola (tiny bran flour and egg balls) and fresh, sour cheese, 澱rebei buddia" (seasoned, boiled lamb and potatoes) and 鍍urtixedda de patata" (potato pie ). The wines belonging to this cuisine are obviously red; Cannonau or red wine from Samugheo.
Bonannaro, Banari
Continuing along you come to Bonannaro, a town known for its unique-tasting cherries and for which a celebration is held in spring. On the other hand, if you are looking to try delicate-tasting but strong smelling onions, stop at Banari where you can also visit the 溺useo/Fondazione Logudoro-Meilogu" (museum/foundation for the Logudoro-Meilogu) for contemporary art.
Siligo-Ardara, Ploaghe
Situated on provincial road nー 131 in the direction of Siligo-Ardara, is the church of Santa Maria di Mesumundu, refined, Byzantine construction dating back to the XI century. Entering the town of Ardara, you will find the Roman churches of Santa Maria del Regno, built in austere black trachyte (one of the few Sardinian churches of the era not having undergone subsequent remodelling). Not far from Ardara and before Ploaghe, you will come upon the Roman churches S. Michele di Salvenero and S. Antonio Abate. Let's make another gastronomic stop; we mustn't miss out on the typically local 吐avate"; stewed beans and cotechino or the various stews and kettles of meat, sheep or pork, seasoned with the delicious, local olives.
Codrongianus
After your break, the next stop will be Codrongianus. Just outside of town on the road to Sassari, you will find the Basilica della Santissima Trinit di Saccargia, with its alternating dark basalt and white calcareous blocks, emblematic of Roman-Pisan art in Sardinia.
Sassari
Our journey ends in Sassari. During your visit downtown, you will admire the spectacular Duomo di S. Nicola, Gothic in style but with a splendid Baroque-Spanish fa軋de, the church of S. Maria di Betlem and in the outskirts of town the church of S. Pietro di Silki, both in Gothic-Aragonese and Gothic-Catalan styles. Before concluding our visit of the city's monuments and museums, like the Fountain of Rosello or the Museo Nazionale Sanna, let's stop in one of the numerous local eateries and taste 斗e lumache", true speciality of which Sassaresi are very fond. Other specialities that can be found throughout the city include 妬 piedini d'agnello", cooked in spicy tomato sauce and 斗o zimino" (roasted veal chitterlings). If strolling through town, you can taste 斗a fain", floured chick-peas, remnant of commercial dealings between Sassari and Genova.
