The Castle of Pedres is a well-kept fortress located on a granite hill overlooking the Olbia bay. Its stately 15 m high ruins can be seen from the centre of Olbia.
The first historic witnesses about the castle date back to the period included between 1296 and 1388. The structure is made up by two fenced squares. The upper square is made up by the main tower, which originally had 4 floors and a terrace from where it was possible to control the whole area. In order to defend the castle better, the entrance to the tower was positioned 3,75 metres above the ground and was accessible trough movable wooden ladders.
It is likely that the castle was built during the regency of the Visconti family: this can be inferred by the style of the structure, very similar to the 撤isano" one.
Not far from the site, you can find the 敵iant's Grave" of Su Monte de S'Abe and the Nuraghe Casteddu, two buildings of great importance during the Nuragic time.
Getting there:
The Castle is a couple of kilometres away from Olbia: take the road to Loiri and turn right at km 3,3 when you see the sign for 鼎anile Europa". Go past the football ground on your right hand side and travel on for other 2km. You will get to the parking in front of the castle, easily accessible at any time of the day.
