THE LOCAL AREA
Vignola Mare is on the northern coast of Sardinia in the Aglientu area of the Gallura region, next the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. The beaches of the area, such as the famous Chiscinaggiu and Tavunatu beaches, are famous for their soft white sand and borders of granite outcroppings that give them a fascinating, wild beauty. A visit to the Vignola Tower, built during the period where the Spanish ruled Sardinia, is unmissable, as are visits to the rural churches of Saint Pancras (San Pancrazio) and Saint Blaise (San Biagio), and the Finucchjalghja and Tuttusoni nuraghi (prehistoric settlements of great importance). In the summer the three-day Aglientu summer festival is celebrated, and in the second week of August there is a fabulous tourist festival. Gallura is one of the most interesting regions of Sardinia, peppered with important archeological remains such as dolmen, a necropolis, the so-called 'tombs of the giants' (prehistoric burial complexes), nuraghi (prehistoric settlements) and ancient churches. From Aglientu it is also easy to visit the stunning Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda) and the breathtaking National Park of the Asinara (an island teeming with rare wildlife).
