This corner of Sardinia, as many others, is unmistakable because of its solitude, narrow curves and vegetation that announces a nearness to the sea. It could have been a classic landscape; beaches and blue water, villas and residences, restaurants and discos. On the contrary, Argentiera is an agglomerate of old, dark, wooden buildings - a postcard from old times, a black and white picture. Its a nearly frightening image that recalls the days of suffering and fatigue and the struggle to survive…
There is the big, half-moon shaped Frana Beach where the sand is mixed with dust coming from the silver mine has been deposited for centuries. A huge artificial dune dominates the landscape and seems to measure and testify to the fatigue of those who never had the opportunity to really enjoy this marvellous and unique panorama of the sea. Nearly forty years have passed since the last working day in the mine. Argentiera has fallen in silence… The old mining quarters have slowly become unpopulated, the habitants left the place to look for a new and different life.
