Dog-friendly beaches: the best beaches in Sardinia with access for pets

We are now in the midst of the 2015 summer season, which for many dog owners heading on holiday can present a problem: how to travel together with your four legged friends without leaving them closed in a hotel room while owners enjoy themselves on the beach.

Sardinia, in its quest to continuously improve the quality of tourism, while respecting animals and the environment, is making progress in hospitality for pets. This includes accommodation facilities willing to accept dogs as well as beach establishments suitable for dogs and equipped accordingly. Still a way behind leading countries such as Switzerland and Germany, Sardinia now has over 30 dog-friendly beaches around the island. Below, a selection of the best:

TILIGUERTA DOG BEACH AT COSTA REI, MURAVERA (Cagliari)

Located at the entrance of Tiliguerta Camping Village, Tiliguerta Dog Beach is open to guests of the camping village and to visitors. The Dog Beach is on one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Sardinia, Costa Rei.

Services: bowls of water always available, floating toys for the sea, showers for dogs, dog sitter and canine educator on request, 100% natural snacks, biodegradable bags for excrement, cleaning and daily disinfestation.

ANIMAL FRIENDLY AREA AT PORTO PINO, SANT’ANNA ARRESI (Carbonia-Iglesias)

The dog beach at Porto Pino was the first dog beach to be established in Sardinia and also one of the most beautiful, with its clear waters and fine white sand. Located between the first and the second beach in the renowned tourist destination, the animal-friendly area is 40 metres wide, free of charge and is run by volunteers of the national society for the protection of dogs, in collaboration with the town of Sant’Anna Arresi. Nearby there is a pine forest for cool breaks and relaxing walks.

PORTO FIDO, SANTA TERESA DI GALLURA (Olbia-Tempio)

Located on the beach of Porto Quadro, Porto Fido has 25 places and accepts dogs of all sizes.

CAPRERA DOGGIE BEACH, LA MADDALENA (Olbia-Tempio

Located in Caprera, at the beach of Porto Palma, in the heart of the national park of La Maddalena, Caprera Doggie Beach is a collaborative effort between the voluntary association AREVAPANA Onlus and the national park of La Maddalena. It requests the mandatory use of a leash, an up-to-date health certificate and immediate cleaning of excrement.
