Sardinian Halloween or nearly..

Halloween isn’t merely an Anglo Saxon custom…the celebration of the dead and their souls is global as I discovered when reading about “Su Prugadoriu”..or purgatory..  in Sardinia.
In some Sardinian villages in fact, the cult of unsettled souls from purgatory is very much felt and deeply rooted, dating back to ancient times.
The small village of Seui, only a few kilometers from Sadali and Jerzu, has maintained this ancient tradition and from the 30th of October to the 1st of November, the 14th edition of the “Su Prugadoriu” festival will take place.

The “Su Prugadoriu” festival in Seui takes its name after “Purgatorio” and refers to the old and widespread custom in which children knock on people’s doors asking for cakes or sweets to give as a comfort to the restless souls in purgatory. This ancient ritual has now been integrated with the agro-pastoral culture of the area and has become an opportunity to promote typical products, like for example, artisanry, music, popular traditions and customs of the Ogliastra area in the central and eastern part of the island.
All sorts of interesting activities will take place, it’s a real occasion to see some wonderful pieces of real Sardinian folklore. There will be visits to the old “magasinus” with specially set up areas showing the long established artisanry of the territory and the inland (barbagia) of the Seulo region. Here there will be a wide range of local products on offer, and to taste and relish..cheese and wine for a start.
“Sa omu de sa maja” is a particularly “Halloweeny” representation, it consists in suggestive old songs and chants for the dead (is attitidus) as well as the exhibit of the characteristic Seui mask “Sa Mammulada” (representing a sheep’s head with horns.. )which has been beautifully rebuilt and its story will be told in detail.
A medieval village , evocative traditions and twilight … a magical, fun and …a slightly spooky atmosphere….
