Costa Rei is a stunning area on the southeast coast of Sardinia, and one of the island’s best kept secrets. The beaches here are, according to many experts, the most beautiful of them all, Costa Smeralda included, and there is the additional benefit of having a more relaxed experience, that is also much lighter on the holiday budget.
At just 50km from the port and airport in the Sardinian capital, Cagliari, it takes just an hour to drive to Costa Rei. There is a new dual carriageway with wonderful views, or the panoramic coastal road, which is also highly recommended, for its outstanding beauty. Not to be taken if rushing to the airport, but to enjoy with time to stop and take in the views.
There are several kilometres of white, sandy beaches in Costa Rei. It truly is a paradise. The clearest water, often calm on the protected east coast, it is a natural hotspot. Mountains form a stunning backdrop and a skyline that is so pleasing to the eye, with its hues of green to contrast with the many blues of the sea and sky.
Although the southeast coast is quieter than the northeast, and the Costa Smeralda, there are many facilities that will ensure an unforgettable holiday. Surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing, canoeing, scuba diving and boat hire are all available, as well as horse riding. It is also a wonderful place for trekking. There are shops and services in the small town of Costa Rei itself, as well as the nearby beach town of Villasimius, with its pleasant summer nightlife, and Muravera. Cagliari is only an hour away, with its concert season, jazz, theatres, markets, dining al fresco and excellent shopping. The most wonderful beaches in the area include Cala Sinzias, Cala Pira, Capo Ferrato and Porto Pirastu. There are also some extraordinary artefacts from historic times, with the site of Piscina Rei, dating back to the Neolithic period. Twenty two menhirs are still standing, pointing to the sunrise. The nuragic settlement Nuraghe Scalas is also a fascinating landmark, with 42 menhirs. A place to discover, then come back to.
